Cardinals Cut Deep with Barbed Wire

Cork five-piece Cardinals continue to rise after solidifying their position at the forefront of the Irish rock movement with the release of “Barbed Wire”. This song, which will be included on their highly anticipated first album, Masquerade, features the band truly embracing the darker, more cynical overtones that characterise the second half of their upcoming record. It’s a captivating, atmospheric song that substitutes something darker and more emotionally profound for the lighter buzz of previous songs.

The title, “Barbed Wire”, stands out right away as a possible nod to darker times in Irish history. With a deep, resonant bassline and a rhythmic structure that will leave you feeling a little uneasy, the song slowly builds tension. Here, lead singer Euan Manning’s vocals play a major role. His lyrics, which are seemingly inspired by the sights and sounds of their home, Cork, paint a vivid and unapologetic picture of urban disillusion. “Alcohol and ecstasy / And Aperol and THC” is a powerful depiction of youthful excess and the pursuit of escape.

The song is a masterclass in building tension. The production is clear and roomy, enabling each instrument to add to the song’s intensity. Compared to earlier releases, the lead guitar work is a perfect fit with its shrieking bends; it precisely matches the track’s title. Importantly, the band is able to incorporate their signature elements, such as Finn Manning’s accordion, as a textural, melancholic wash, adding a layer of folk-like despair that feels unique to them. What makes Cardinals so captivating is the combination of guitar music mixed with lyrical themes that are deep-rooted in their Irish background.

Although “Barbed Wire” is a deep cut, it demonstrates that Cardinals really are not just another guitar band. The entire album looks to be a crucial statement in 2026 if this song is representative of Masquerade’s darker side.
