January Essentials – Unpacking the Month’s Latest Tracks

Following an incredible year of music in 2025, 2026 seems to be just as exciting. January has seen some excellent releases from bands like Westside Cowboy, The Cribs and many more, but here are some of our favourites from across the UK and Ireland.

Bleech 9:3 – “Cannonball

Following our chat with the band back in December, “Cannonball” arrives as the third single from Dublin’s Bleech 9:3. The song begins quiet and restrained before launching into a Nirvana-esque quiet-loud dynamic. With an outstanding vocal performance from lead singer Baz and an incredible drum sound that truly brings this track together. I think it’s safe to say Bleech 9:3 are on a spectacular rise. “Cannonball” is the best of Bleech 9:3 so far, and they aren’t showing signs of slowing down.

Two of the Same – “Fall”

“Fall” is the latest single from Manchester-based band “Two of the Same”. Over the last two years, they have been meticulously crafting their sound, shifting through various experimental phases before arriving at the sophisticated “Alt rock” sound they’ve mastered today. Following from the last single, “Occupation”, in 2025, “Fall” offers something much more textured and somewhat emotional, marking a departure from the band’s previous sound.  It’s a song for reflection featuring catchy guitar riffs and outstanding vocals. What’s not to love?

Crimson 97 – “As Long As It Takes”

Crimson 97, an alternative rock band from Aylesbury that has been making a name for itself in the scene since 2021, caught our attention with their new single, “As Long As It Takes”. The new song is a cinematic change that highlights the band’s developing maturity and their ability to blend grunge and post-punk with a more melodic, indie-focused core.

In contrast to the band’s previous songs, “As Long as It Takes” has a warmth that leans towards a new sound and poignant lyrics. Crimson 97 are undoubtedly ushering in a new era, having already garnered attention for their live performances and ability to push the limits of contemporary alt-rock. It’s a polished, genuine release that raises the bar for 2026.

Thumper – “There Will Be Blood

Another Dublin-based band, THUMPER are a psychedelic-rock six-piece that have rapidly transitioned from playing hometown shows to becoming a household name in the Irish alt-rock scene. Following their Choice Music Prize-nominated debut, “Delusions of Grandeur“, the band has unleashed “There Will Be Blood” as the latest single ahead of their highly anticipated sophomore album, “Sleeping With The Light On“, set for release on February 20, 2026.

The song itself begins with a peaceful piano restraint that is quickly forgotten as the band erupts into a wall of sound. The dual drummer setup provides a unique aspect like no other. “There Will Be Blood” captures that live intensity in a nearly six-minute hint of what can be expected from “Sleeping With The Light On”.

Restless Taxis – “Maggie’s”

Hailing from the East London DIY scene, Restless Taxis are a four-piece band which was founded in 2019 and has progressed significantly since their initial “bedroom” recordings. Released on January 13th, 2026, their new single “Maggie’s” serves as the main focus of their early-year momentum, further honing their sound.

The song is an exercise in shoegaze; it begins with a jangling, acoustic part that rips into a psychedelic deluge of noise. It is infused with the kind of frenzied, J Mascis-inspired guitar work that has come to be associated with them. These days, Restless Taxis are more than simply a grassroots group; they are moving with complete confidence from the underground to a larger national stage.

Whether it’s the DIY grit of Restless Taxis or the rapid rise of Bleech 9:3, it’s safe to say 2026 is set to be an incredible year for grassroots music and beyond.
